How to Get Over the Imposter Syndrome

I’ve seen and heard it time and time again that we don’t want to feel like a fraud or imposter in our business.  You want to show up, do what you have been called to do, but for some reason, you just feel like you’re not qualified, adequate, experienced, or well known enough to do anything.   So instead of putting yourself out there for others to see, you keep it to yourself.  You show off to yourself and believe that you’re amazing at what you do, but you keep doubting that anyone else will ever feel the same.

I have good news for you, but because in this post, I’m sharing with you the myth behind the imposter syndrome and feeling like a fraud.  You’ll be happy you read this, I promise!

What does it really mean to feel like a fraud or an imposter in your business?  Maybe it looks like doing something that you feel like you’re not quite ready to do or believing you can help others in their business with a particular product or service, or perhaps it’s just simply showing up and showcasing your value.

When you feel this way, ask yourself:

  1. WHY do I feel this way?

  2. Is this feeling my truth?

  3. What can I do to shift out of this way of thinking?

An imposter is being someone you are not; a phony, or a fake.  This is NOT who you are.

Consider what Matthew 5:13-16 says, we are the salt of the earth and if the salt loses it taste then it is good for nothing.

Do not discredit your work or disqualify yourself from being able to show up as God created you to. Your work and your purpose is the salt of the earth.  Believing that you can not show up as an expert, influencer, leader, or pioneer takes the taste out of your work. The result of this way of thinking is you ultimately believe your work is no good. No one will value it, respect it, or desire it.

One of the purposes of salt is to preserve.  So then if your intelligent and creative work loses it taste, meaning, its voice, is values, its authenticity, influence, confidence, then you will find it difficult to stand in your most authentic and God-given purpose.

When you cast off this limiting belief that causes you to shrink back from what God had already chosen you for, then you are NOT being an imposter or fraud, but you are being exactly who called has called you to be.

Matthew 5 also says that you are the light of the world and a light that cannot be hidden. Are you tired of hiding?

Ask yourself:

  1. Why do I hide or shrink back from the things that will be me closer to my purpose?

  2. What is holding me back from unlocking my highest potential?

  3. Why am I afraid of seeing myself as the light in my industry that I’m supposed to be?

You are not serving your purpose or others by shrinking back from what makes you unique.

Your purpose was created to impact others whether in your family, community, industry or wherever God has you planted, your purpose was designed for impact.

So what do you do with that blog post that you never published, a website you never designed, or book you never got around to writing.  Matthew 5:15 says Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.

The purpose of the work you have been called to do is to be a light in your industry or house as the scripture describes it.  When you are keeping your work from others and not allowing God to get the glory from the gifts He placed inside of you, this is being an imposter and a fraud.

Standing in a place of fear that tries to devalue your worth, your potential, and causes you to not take ownership of your identity in Christ is what a real imposter is.  This is NOT who you are.

You have to trust that where you are right now is enough for you to take the next step in your life and business to see the transformation.

The next time you set yourself to do work, how about you finish it and share it with others.  We are all waiting to see your light.
